A letter from Dan Yessian

If you’re reading this, then it’s likely that you already know me or have been following my work and various journeys…but my story never would have happened if my parents hadn’t embarked on their own journeys and immigrated to the United States of America. The “old country”, as it were, was not a safe place for them…but there was hope in a far-away land, if only they could get there.

My mother and father met here in America where they started their family and I was the first natural-born American citizen, followed shortly by my brother, Mark. We went to public schools, we ate peanut butter sandwiches, and we watched local television. When we were old enough, we played American music together, forming bands that would play everything from Jazz to Polish Wedding songs. It was the proverbial “melting pot” and we were simmering in it.

Every flight has turbulence and every road has twists and turns. Times were not always easy but we made it work, and we started families of our own. Today, I’m blessed with 7 grandchildren and thankfully everyone is healthy and happy.

Could I have made it in any other country? Perhaps, but the American principles of freedom and self determination were – and still are – paramount to success and survival.

On this Memorial Day we keep in mind those who sacrificed and paid the ultimate price so that we might maintain those principles…that we keep our freedom, and our God given rights.

Watch “Honoring America’s Protectors”, a short Youtube playlist including the song “Ring Around The Moon”, commentary by singer Kenny Watson and myself, and an interview with veteran Peter Holden who was a Chinook helicopter pilot in Vietnam.
