Detroit knows the late Ernie Harwell as the voice of the Tigers for the duration of 42 seasons. I’d been a friend of the late Harwell’s for many years. Not just good friends but also cowriters of music.
At some point Harwell approached me to write a theme song for the Detroit Tigers and it found its way onto WJR during game broadcasts. If you knew Ernie as well as I did, you would have found him to be unpretentious and genuine. A very humble man.
It was because of Ernie that Jose Feliciano was invited to sing the National Anthem at Tiger Stadium in his iconic performance.
The team would win the World Series in 1984, and I was proud to be a part of it all.
