I’m back this week with part 2 of Stranger Truths featuring Ernie Harwell.
After an introduction by mutual friend and WJR host John Delle-Monache, Ernie and I wrote a variety of music together.
Our song “Tiger, Tiger” made steady radio rotation in 1984 after Detroit won the World Series.
We would continue to work on all sorts of material; he writing lyrics and myself composing melodies and arrangements. Our collaborations led to a true friendship. We had countless conversations about anything from baseball, to philanthropy, and faith…spending time together at Tiger Stadium, recording studios, and restaurants. I’ll share a number of anecdotes that will describe the humility of this real gentleman.
Although he described himself as a “Tongue twisted kid from Georgia”, Ernie Harwell will be forever remembered a “Detroiter” for his countless Tigers broadcasts.
